I like to share my view on various subjects. Finding the right outlet to share it isn’t always easy. I am indebted to TFT, Mongabay and the Huffington Post for publishing a number of my posts over the past years. Yet, seldom a day goes by where I don’t see something in the news or on Twitter that prompts some reflection and has me thinking “I’d like to write something about that”. It’s in my nature to think about things and then to prompt discussion to see what others think too. I like the mental jousting. Yet, sometimes those reflections and thoughts don’t fit squarely into a 140-character tweet or an 800-word blog. Also, no matter what I write, people link it to TFT. That’s OK but I have thoughts on subjects not related to TFT’s work and prefer more independence.

Being constrained is no fun for me either. You can’t post something everyday on someone else’s blog post and if I’m posting on someone else’s site, I must abide by their norms and approaches. Conforming to others’ best practice is good for me, rounds out the edges. But sometimes you just want to say what you want to say and be done. Let the discussion begin!

I just feel that I want to be able to post my thoughts whenever I want in whatever form takes my fancy. I want to explore and take something of an adventure with my writing. That really only seems possible if I own the blog space myself.

Whether anyone will ever read the posts is another thing but securing a broad readership is not why I write. Writing helps me get my own thoughts together in something of a coherent form. It brings some order but it can also be a wild ride where you throw structure and care to the wind and just post! It’s exciting. It’s liberating. It’s freedom.

So for me, scottpoynton.com is my own, personal space. It’s my shed. It’s of course a shared space, I will tweet the posts, as will TFT and perhaps others. But at the end of the day, it’s where I can express who I am, what I think and engage with the world in my own way. That’s nice.
